Based in the deep woods of Western Massachusetts after a long stretch in San Francisco, Unagi has been making hip-hop since the nineties, when he emerged with his crew Discs of Tron. He released his debut album in 2003 on his own label 442 Records, and has collaborated with a gang of underground OGs, including Motion Man, King Cesar, and Infinito 2017.
 
Primarily a producer, he was doing the lo-fi beat tape thing way before it was a genre, putting out a dozen more albums over the last 20 years. For “Terminally Eel” he gets on the microphone too, dropping nostalgic storytelling raps over an assortment of sample-heavy, funk-forward tracks. Lyrically, he reflects on rural living, growing up hip-hop, career anonymity, and true love.
 
The memoir of an aging b-boy, it’s a must-hear for anybody who came up loving rap music but drifted away due to today’s different vibe/lowered standards, as well as younger heads who appreciate the “true school” style of days past. Boom-bap jams with heart and a sense of humor, something we could all use more of today.
